Albi

From several kilometres away, the bell tower of Saint-Cécile is visible like a lighthouse. You need time to look around this Cathedral, time to reflect. The Tarn, in this area, has an almost Tuscan feel to it, a paradoxical river, calm as you view it from the bridges of the town, yet turbulent enough to trap fishermen, just a little way upstream. Again, take your time in the Berbie Palace Gardens, and the cloister of Saint-Salvy. Albi is a kind of secret town, which you can only explore slowly. It was here that the co-operative system was established. If you fancy a quiet drink, try le bar de la Poste, or le bar du Poniter.
