Argelès-Gazost

The Tour de France comes through this village, and it’s the country residence of Jacques Chancel. A very pleasant place to visit, if you are on your way to Lourdes or visiting the Lavedon region and Gavarnie.

Surrounded by mountains, Argelès-Gazost has, like so many local villages, a spa. It’s quite a small place – walking through the centre does not take long, but there are two interesting 16th and 17th century houses, and at the top of the Mendaigne Tower, there is a panorama table which shows the points of interest in the valley below you.

If the spectacular view from there is not enough for you, then go out of the village towards Lourdes, then towards Ouzous. Then get your walking boots on, and walk up the hill, or rather, mountain. It will take you 2 hours, but the view from the top will make you forget your aches and blisters!

Approximately 10km outside Argeles is the Lavendon museum, which is in the heart of the village of Aucun. It’s worth a detour. And the village itself is so spectacular that several film directors have used it as a backdrop.
