Auch
A culinary town made famous by head-chef André Daguin, at the hotel de France. It was only as late as the 18th century that the town became the political centre of Gascony. It is especially well-known for its Cathedral Sainte-Marie, which makes a detour to the town worthwhile. Especially the stained glass windows, designed during the Renaissance by Arnaud de Moles. Beautiful red and golden windows, with the sun behind them, make the visitor stop and stare. Their style was copied throughout the region. In 1513, once they were finished, Arnaud de Moles lost his sight.
To go from the upper town to the lower town, go to the Pousterles district, and take the stairs. At times, as roads cross, you feel like youre in an Escher painting, with incomprehensible perspectives.

Feeling hungry? Push open the door of any of the numerous auberges, and enjoy delicious duck. Also worth it if you are there in the spring, is the singing festival Eclats de Voix. All sorts of singing styles go!
