Auvillar

Originally known as “Alta Villa” or high place, Auvillar is perched on top of a hill, overlooking the Garonne. Since the middle ages, a castle overlooks the valley in a strategic position. During the 100 years war, it was invaded by the English and the Black Prince, son of Edward III. And during the wars of religion in the 16th century, it was totally destroyed.

Despite its tumultuous history, Auvillar has preserved some remarkable architectural features. The old town gate, the “Tour de L’horloge” is still standing, as are some spectacular 17th and 18th century houses overlooking the exquisite triangular town square.

A little further on, the visitor will be surprised by the size of the Saint-Pierre church, which dates from the 12th century. It was damaged during the aforementioned wars, but is well worth the visit – it remains well preserved.

Back outside, the castle offers a breathtaking view of the beautiful Garonne… and the Golftech nuclear power station. Call it progress.
