Cordes

Some critics say that the devil threw his hammer, and where it landed, they built Cordes. The town dates back to the Albi crusade in 1222. At a time when incense was the only acceptable smell, Cordes stank of sulphur. It’s perched on a hill overlooking the valley, and was as big as Albi in the 13th century. When weaving machines were invented in the 14th century, a period of prosperity followed.
Take a walk round the town. The tiny twisting roads make for a very pleasant stroll, up to the Porte de l’Horloge, for example. Go right up to the top of the town and admire the view, and the line of renaissance buildings.

There is an excellent restaurant at la Maison du Grande Ecuyer. In mid-July, there is a medieval festival with artists and artisans taking to the street and la grande halle, in traditional costume.

Camus lived in Cordes, and he commented: “Everything here is beautiful, even regret”
