La Couvertoirade

Originally, la Couvertoirade was controlled by the Nant Abbey, and was then occupied by The Templiers in the 12th century. When they were disbanded, they were replaced by a fighting force called Les Hospitaliers Saint-Jean de Jérusalem. All of which made La Couvertoirad look like a fortress. The castle was built between the 12th and the 13th centuries, and the ramparts were added in the 15th century. Two towers flank the massive north door to the village. Today, visitors can climb a narrow stairway to the top, from where there is a fantastic view of the village.
The church is dominated by the Maltese cross, symbol of the Hospitaliers Warriors.

A cemetery surrounds it. Visitors to La Couvertoirade are particularly well advised to try some of the delicious poultry which is the village speciality. Bon appetit!
