Gaillac

Famous for its history and wine, and it’s historical wine – yes you did read right, Gaillac is the oldest appellation in France. Benedictine monks set up in the Saint-Michel Abbey in the 10th century, and wine has been made here ever since. The well-known historical reference work on Occitania, entitled “Histoire Generale de Languedoc” was written by a Gallic monk, Dom Vayssette.

The gardens of the parc Focaud and the chateau are well worth the detour, as is the local painters museum. And if you like a glass or two, don’t miss the wine festival in mid-August. Cheers!
