Luchon

This town is known as “the Queen of the Pyrenees” and was originally called “Bagnères de Luchon”. This town was well known in the 19th Century, and frequented by such notable figures as Lamartine, Flaubert, Bismark, and Matai-Hari. Even Napoleon III came here. In the streets of the town centre, you occasionally get the feeling that you are walking through a 19th scene. Almost 6000 people per month pass through the town to enjoy the healing properties of the waters. Skiing is also a popular pursuit, with 23 pistes available at SuperBagnères, which is accessible via ski lift. The local speciality is “pistache” which is like the

Cassoulet from nearby Toulouse, but with a stronger flavour. Before heading back to your hotel, why not pop into the vapourium, to enjoy the 73-degree springs that flow from the mountainside?

If you want to appear really fluent, just call iit “Le Vapo” like the locals do. Finally, note that every Sunday in August there is a wonderful flower parade, right through the centre of town.
