Millau

The second largest town in the départment is known for a lot more than its infamous motorway delays! It’s an innovative place, which succeeds in blending old architecture with contemporary urbanism. And it’s not everyone’s cup of tea! The modern paving in la place de l’Ancienne Comédie, for example, caused a storm of protest. La rue Droite, the main road through the town, has some very interesting buildings above the numerous shops – among them the square tower from the 12th Century, which you can climb.

“Everyone in Millau is a glove-maker” It’s the French glove capital, and the main income of the town for many centuries was this high-quality production. Originally, the milk obtained from sheep was used to make cheese, which necessitated the early slaughter of lambs (to maximise the available milk). The young lamb skins were used to make gloves, and an industry was born. In 1930, the economic depression hit the town hard, but the glove production has picked up again recently.
