Moissac

An important old Roman centre, Moissac inherited a rich architectural heritage. Go right to the centre of town to see its legendary abbey. Some legends claim Clovis himself decided where to build it, by standing on a hill and throwing his spear. Wherever the spear landed, that’s where he’d build his abbey. The problem is, his spear landed in a swamp! True or not, the abbey suffers from humidity problems to this day. Not a lot of the original construction remains. In the 12th century, a beautiful Roman style door was added, and this is a famously well-preserved piece.

Also magnificent is the Roman cloister, one of the most famous in the world. Seventy-six arches and excellent sculptures please even the most uneducated eye.

Situated a few kilometres from its rival, Castelsanasin, Montauban has excelled in the exploitation of the vine. It is the largest producer of table grapes in France.
