Puy-L’Évêque

An enchanting village worth walking round and taking the time to look at the ancient houses and streets. You’ll need a fair amount of energy; it’s a hilly little place, with a lot of steep streets and stairways, but it’s a really charming village. There are some magnificent views of the Lot river valley. The village’s original name was “Puech” which means “Up high” – a particularly well-chosen name!

A flourishing medieval village, Puy adopted the Cathar faith, but the Christian and Catholic churches soon put it back on the straight and narrow. Take a careful look at Saint-Sauveur church. It has a remarkable gothic bell-tower. There is a dungeon in the Place de la Truffiière, the only remaining vestige of the castle, which protected the town.
