Roquefort-sur-Soulzon

This town, on the Larzau Plateau, is world-famous for its mouldy cheese. It’s a connoisseurs town, where you can tour various strong-smelling cellars and enjoy a sample of the creamy concoction spread on a slice of good crusty bread. It’s pretty strong, so be warned!

The story goes that it was a shepherd’s discovery – he left a slice of bread and cheese to go mouldy , and when he tentatively bit into it later that month, it actually tasted pretty good! The cheese was famous from the middle ages onwards.




The 100 000 or so ewes in the surrounding fields give up their milk for the creation of this heavenly cheese. Worth a tasting!
